Japanese is a very hierarchical language according to the social position of the person talking and the person listening, the talker will use certain words which he or she would never use in other situations. Also Japanese spoken by men is quite different from that spoken by women. There are expressions, words, and constructions which a man would never use for fear of sounding effeminate and vice versa.

There isn't one way to say 'I' in Japanese. There is a huge variety of pronouns, both in first and second persons. The third person is the exception. Depending on your gender and who you are talking to, you will use a different personal pronoun.
Ex.:
A) A 40-year-old Osaka born employee in an important company.
1) If he is talking to his boss: Watashi
2) If he is talking to his wife: Washi

B) A 20-year-old girl
1) If she is talking to her boyfriend: Atashi
2) If she is talking to a teacher: Watashi

C) A 25-year-old male student

2) If he is talking with the father of a friend: Boku

But very often, instead of using the proper pronoun, we use the person's name, title, or profession, even if we are talking to them.
Ex.: "You are intelligent."
Talking to a teacher:
先生は頭がいいです。
Sensei wa atama ga ii desu.

Sensei - teacher / wa - SP / atama ga ii - intelligent / desu - verb to be

Talking to Tanaka:
田中さんは頭がいいです。
Tanaka-san wa atama ga ii desu.

It may seem that we are talking about a third person, but it's actually face to face.

The third person, he/she is a special case. The Japanese don't use the he/she pronouns much. They simply use the name or title of the person they want to talk about.
An example already used is:
先生は頭がいいです。
Which can be translated two different ways.
1) You are intelligent.
2) The teacher is intelligent.
The difference is, that in the first case, we are talking with the teacher, and in the second case, we are talking about the teacher. WE can only tell whether we must use second or third person through the context.

Still Japanese does have third person pronouns which are:
彼 (kare) he
彼女 (kanojo) she

Be careful with these pronouns! They can also mean, respectfully, 'boyfriend' and 'girlfriend', depending on the context.
When you say the sentence:
彼女は頭がいいです。
Kanojo wa atama ga ii desu.
People might understand this as 'My girlfriend is intelligent.' instead of 'She is intelligent.', which is what you might have wanted to say.

The plural is very similar to the singular as far as the use goes.

The third person plural is 彼ら (karera) they (talking about men) and 彼女たち (kanojotachi) they (talking about women).

Other pronouns that weren't shown earlier are:
Washi(I) - Men over 40 (often dialectal)
Asshi(I) - Women in informal situations
Kisama(You) - Used threateningly by men
Temee(You) - Used by angry men

There are more, but a bit of advice that is very useful would be to use 'watashi' in all situations. It's easy to remember, you will never make a mistake, and people you are talking to will think you are most polite.

All of the days have the 'yōbi' part the same, just like all the days end in 'day' for us in English. The reason, is because yōbi means day of the week. The kanji before 曜日(yōbi)tells you the day of the week. 日(Nichi - Sun), 月(Getsu - Moon), 火(Ka - Fire), 水(Sui - Water), 木(Moku - Tree), 金(Kin - Metal(Gold)), & 土(Do - Earth). So Sunday is called Sun Day, Monday - Moon Day, Tuesday - Fire Day, Wednesday - Water Day, Thursday - Tree Day, Friday - Metal(Gold) Day, & Saturday - Earth Day.

As I talked about earlier with the kanji 新(new), in Japanese Learning ~ 3, you can see that the kanji 日 is being used twice in Sunday, but once again, is being pronounced two different ways. The first time, it's being pronounced 'nichi' which is the on'yomi way of saying it. 'Nichi is referring to sun and the second time 日 is being used it's being used the kun'yomi way, 'bi' meaning day. The same thing with 月 as it too, has two meanings: Tsuki (moon) and Gatsu (month). It is read differently according to it's meaning.

There are no specific names for the days of the months, in English, we just say "Today is the 1st/25th/16/etc.. of the month." We just use numbers. In Japanese the names of the days do exist... well at least from 1 to 10. From the 11th on, we use the number and all you do is add the word 日(nichi). So if we are on the 26th we will say:
今日は二十六です。
Kyō wa ni jū roku nichi desu.
Today is the 26th.
Kyō - Today / wa - SP / ni jū roku - 26 / nichi - day / desu - verb to be.
The days 1-10 will be a bit of a problem due to their special pronunciations.

The kanji for the days are simple to remember. They are just the number + 日(kanji for day). As you can see, some of the days are pronounced differently. Ex.: 4th - 四日 is no yonnichi, but pronounced yokka. This is one of the many words with a special reading that you'll have to memorize. As I said earlier days from the 11th+ are no problem except fro the 14th which is pronounced as jūyokka, not as jūyonnichi and the 24th which is pronounced as nijūyokka. Also pay attention to the 17th and 19th which are pronounced as jūshichinichi and jūkunichi. The 20th and 30th also have a different pronunciations, so be careful.

In Japanese we don't have month names like we do in English. The Japanese use numbers to name them instead, followed by the kanji 月(Gatsu - Month). So July would be shichigatsu which translates to seventh month. THe pronunciation for April, July, and Semptember are shigatsu, shichigatsu, and kugatsu, NOT yongatsu, nanagatsu or kyūgatsu.

The Japanese, not being Christians, don't follow the Western calendar, which started in remembrance or the birth of Christ. Year 2009 A.D. would be equal to year 21 or the Heisei Era. Although this doesn't mean they don't use our calendar in everyday life. Western influence has overcome tradition and now year 2009 is used as often as year 21 or the Heisei Era, if not more. What is the basis for the Japanese way of counting years? It is based on the reign of the emperors. 1989 was when the first year of the Heisei Era because it was then that the present emperor, Akihito, came to the throne. Here's a look at the most recent eras:

These get a bit more complicated. We have tens, hundreds, thousands, and then-thousands. Tens are simple since they consist of number + 10. So you can see from 60 (六十) six-ten, which is it's literal translation and 30 (三十) three-ten, also it's literal translation. Pay attention to the two pronunciations of 70. Since 700 is pronounced nana hyaku and 7000 is pronounced nana sen, I would suggest to use nana for 70 and 7. People who speak Japanese might still use shichi for 7, 70, and 700, so keep that in mind. Now as I mentioned about 7, 70, 700 and 7000, 4 and 9 have the same thing. For 4 I believe most people will use yon when saying it, because shi is close the word for death. Only 4 and 14 give you the option of pronouncing it one way or the other. As I said with 7, keep the other way in mind too. 9 is the same as 4, meaning only 9 and 19 give you the option of pronouncing them both ways. I would recommend using kyū since they use it for 90, 900, and 9000, but once again, keep the other pronunciation for 9 and 19 in mind.
The hundred and thousands literal translations are the same as saying it in English. 200 is ni hyaku and literally translated as two hundred, 500 is go hyaku with a literal translation of five hundred. 6000 (roku sen) is translated as six thousand. A helpful hint is pay attention to the pronunciations of 300, 600, 800, 3000, and 8000.
The Japanese don't have the same concept we have for 10000, which is known as ten thousand to us. Instead, they say this number as ichi man, 'one man'. The 'man' numbers are easily confusing, so be careful. 1000000 in Japan would be said as hyaku man, 'one hundred man'. 10000000 would be sen man 'one thousand man'.

Above, you can see how to pronounce some numbers.

Western numbers are very often mixed with kanji. The chance of seeing them mixed is even higher when dealing with round numbers. An example would be 3万 (San Man - 30000). To find out the price for something you will always see the kanji for yen (円) after a number. Ex.: 4千円 would be 4000 yen.

The canary was suddenly released into the sky by it's master.
Not knowing what to do, it cried in the rain.
The canary looks so pitiful when it's crying.

Japanese Idioms Part 1

It's been a while and this time instead of posting on Japanese words that I've learned from Manga/Animes... I chose to do a more serious learning Japanese post.

*Note: I will be making another blogspot later on that is just focused on learning Japanese. ^-^

To make this easy I'm going to start with some idiomatic phrases that deal with the body, some you may see later on.

*Idiomatic = Idiom = A word, phrase, or expression which the meaning is figurative. (Generally a colloquial metaphor) An example of an idiom would be: Kick the bucket. The literal meaning of this is to well... kick a bucket. xD While the figurative meaning means 'to die'.
*Figurative = A word, phrase, or expression that change the meaning of the original words to mean something else
*Colloquial = Commonly accepted slang (I'm using the word slang very lightly here) language. It is used mostly in casual, ordinary, familiar, or informal conversation and not recommended for formal writing on speech. Some examples are: Y'all, gonna, wanna, ain't, etc...
*Metaphor = A figure of speech in which a word or phrase that ordinarily designates one thing is used to designate another. This is the most commonly used example that I could find and really helps you understand what a metaphor is, if you don't know.

In this example, "the world" is compared to a stage, describing it with the attributes of “the stage”; "the world" is the tenor, and "a stage" is the vehicle; "men and women" is a secondary tenor, "players" is the secondary vehicle.

Tenor = the subject to which attributes are origin.
Vehicle = the subject whose attributes are borrowed.

Okay, I said this in Newbie post, but I'm fond of using Japanese smileys. So I figured I'd look up a few sites and post the smileys here with meaning. There can sometimes be many with just one meaning. If that happens, I'll post a few so you can get the idea. Learning Japanese 3

Japanese can be written horizontally from left to right (Western style) and vertically from right to left (Traditional style). Both methods are used in Japan today, with a slight favor towards the Western style. However, in almost all printed materials, books, magazines, and mangas, which are written in the traditional style. Japanese punctuations are different from Western ones. A period is written with a small circle " 。" and the coma is written upside down " 、".

Katakana is basically used to write foreign words which have been adapted to Japanese phonetics. So 'computer' becomes konpyūtā コンプーター, 'part-time work' becomes arubaito アルバイト and 'prêt-à-porter' becomes puretaporute プレタポルテ. The examples are from English (computer), German (arbeit) and French (prêt-à-porter). There are also some from Portuguese (pan) パン which is bread, and Spanish (capa) カッパ which means cloak. Most of the foreign words are from the English language. All non-Japanese people's and place names must be written in katakana. The sounds we want to write must be transcribed into Japanese phonetics. Japanese has no individual consonant sounds apart from 'n'. For each consonant by itself, we add a 'u' except for after 't' or 'd' where we add an 'o'. So 'Marc' would become Maruku マルク, 'Sandra' would become Sandora サンドラ and 'Alfred' would become Arufureddo アルフレッド.

Long vowels are pronounced for a little longer as their name suggests. This subtle difference is very important, since the difference between kūso (empty, vain) and kuso (shit) is based on this distinction. To indicate long vowels we will write a 'u' after 'o' and 'u'. Ex.: Kūso くうそ, Gakkō がっこう. In katakana we will use a dash. Ex.: New York Nyū Yōku ニューヨーク, Madrid Madorīdo マドリード.

Double sounds are consonants that have a longer and more abrupt sound than normal ones. A small っ (tsu) character is placed before the consonant to be doubled in hiragana and a small ッ (tsu) is used in katakana. Ex.: しゅっぱつ - Shuppatsu (Starting, Departure), きっさてん - Kissaten (Coffee Shop), ラケット - Raketto (Racket), マッサージ - Massāji (Massage).

On'yomi (reading which comes from Chinese) and Kun'yomi (original Japanese reading). How can we tell if 富士山 is pronounced Fuji-san and not Fuji-yama or Tomishi-san or Tomishi-sen or Fuuji-yama or any other possible combinations? We can't, but we have clues. When a character is by itself in a sentence, it's usually read the kun'yomi way. If it comes with other kanji, it's usually read the on'yomi way. This rule works for about 90% of the time, but be careful of the remaining 10%!

The character for new(新) appears twice in the sentence, but has different pronunciations. The first time it's pronounced the kun'yomi way atara(shii). The second time it's read the 'shin', which would be the on'yomi way and is followed by the kanji meaning 'to hear'. Shin - new / bun - to hear, together they form the word newspaper, which is something that gathers 'new reported things'. So since the characters are together and not alone, we pronounce them the on'yomi way.

Throughout these 'Learning Japanese' posts I do you may see some of these abbreviations. I will do my best to try and keep up with posting each 'Learning Japanese' posts in a little navigation bar, below 'The Tiny Shout'.

Common Expressions: Group of words with a more cultural meaning rather than a lexical one.
Counters: They are used to indicate number, because Japanese nouns are invariable.
Furigana: Small hiragana which tell you have to read kanji.
Gion: Sounds imitating words, similar to our onomatopoeias.
Gitaigo: Words that describe physical states or moods.
Hiragana: Used to write strictly Japanese words.
"I" adjective: One of two Japanese adjectives. This adjective always ends in "i".
Imperative: Conjuction used to give orders.
Kanji: Ideograms originally taken from Chinese, with which most common words and proper nouns are written.
Katakana: Used to write foreign words and onomatopoeias.

Hello~ I wanted to up this to youtube about two months ago, but I couldn't because of Avex copyright. So I've decided to upload it using Blogger, which will work, since Love was nice and put it on her blog a day after I made it. I didn't get to see the comments made for it, if any. I hope they were good! Well this was my first slide-show that I did for a song so I was really really nervous in making it and was second guessing myself if I should share it with anybody, so at the end there is a list of people who supported me. ^^;

I would've had one for BoA's Dakishimeru, but I was having a memory problem with my computer and when I went to save it, my computer decided that was the perfect time to crash, so I don't have it. It was all timed right and done really well, but nope slideshow for BoA.

I fell down the stairs about a week ago again. T_T I'm really really clumsy, I should work on that. I'm sick right now too, so I should be getting some rest, but I'm not. I'm actually staying up late and typing this, bad me. Expect to see the rest of the Japanese Smiley posts this month, it may be this week, so please look forward to it. After that I'll probably be doing Japanese Learning (Self-taught Japanese) and later on when I take Japanese in college it'll be called Learn Japanese. If I do create Learn Japanese I'll probably delete Japanese Learning.

Well that's just and update on me and other stuff for right now, I hope you enjoy this blog, even though it's not much.

Hello!

I don't have enough energy to do a Japanese Smiley post today, so I just figured I'll type just a semi-normal blog post...

First I'd like to say Happy 21st Birthday, Grimmy! Try not to get too drunk, I think you have work tomorrow. (^-^;) I hope you get some really nice gifts and a few gag gifts, lol. If I was there I'd probably cook for ya the whole day, but I'm not. :P You have yet to taste my cooking, muahahaha. Although if we do come down to visit you, I might bake some sweets. ♥~(^-^ )

Today I made two bunches of Udon Noodles and a batch of brownies. (I'll be posting some recipes, that I have tried and liked later on.) I didn't have an 8"x8" (square) pan, so I ended up using an 8" (circle) pan. It sorta looked like a cake, but it tasted so good. (It was a just add water, oil and eggs boxed one.) I prefer making sweets from scratch items if we have them, it's so much fun and smells so good while it's cooking. I think my favorite thing that I've baked so far where some Chocolate Chip Banana Muffins. They came out so well.

I've talked on DBSKer's blog, which I haven't done in while. It was fun talking to some new people on her wonderful blog. If you want to get news on DBSK, get lyrics with translations, download songs, albums, dramas with DBSK, commercials with DBSK, PVs&MVs, and look at some really good pictures of the boys I would check it out. The layout it is awesome and the set-up to get around is really easy. (^-^)

Hello. (^-^)/ I'm new to blogger, so go easy on me if anything isn't up to your expectations. I'll do my best to get there eventually, but as for right now, you'll have to put up with this. I'll be posting up some Japanese language help, since I'm currently learning it myself, so please don't expect much. (^-^") Once I get into a Japanese course in college, I'll be starting a new section with notes that I take in the class, if you wish to learn it too. By the way, I love to use Japanese smileys when talking. I'll probably make a page with Japanese smileys and the meanings of them later on, but you can probably already guess what they mean seeing as how and when I use them.

I'm a fan of Asian music, with some American music. American music has changed from what I was used to, so I decided to look up some other music. I remember looking on youtube and finding Tohoshinki's Rising Sun (Korean) music video and it was really different from U.S. music videos. InuYasha was probably what really got me into Asian music, most the intros and endings to the anime I fell in love with. I won't post what artists I like here, I'll probably do that later in some other post.
